Fieldfares rarely occur in deep forest and prefer to remain on the edges, in clearings, along the banks (Fig. 3.21). For this strategy the decisive factor is the presence o f herbaceous vegetation in small dense tussocks, and lack o f lichens in the ground layer. Such habitats are usually available on the dry well drained p a tch es o f fertile soil or in anthropogenic landscape. Fieldfares, like Redwings, take food from the ground. However, this thrush mainly feeds in open places with herbs in the ground layer and takes food from rel atively dense soil or from turf formed by the rootage o f herbs. When foraging, Fieldfares make comparatively short series o f hops often interrupted by picks. The birds make many shallow picks hardly penetrating the surface and take relatively small food objects (Fig. 3.23, Baranovsky et al., in press). Song Thrush prefers to settle in dry birch forests or mixed pine and birch stands with a large proportion o f birch (Fig. 3.21). The presence o f birch tree waste and a well-developed ground layer with untouched surface is essential for this species (Baranovsky et al., in press).
