numbers o f Bramblings in the forest habitats o f Pasvik. Eurasian Redstart. Redstarts often occur together with Willow Warblers and Bramblings in similar habitats, but in much smaller numbers. It is impor tant to determine the typical features of behaviour and ecology of Redstarts that allow them to avoid competition and to co -occur with the two other species. Eurasian Redstarts prefer to breed in high sparse pine forests with the ground layer o f mosses and lichens. In natural ecosystems such forest types are formed in relatively high and dry places (Fig. 3.1, type 3). On the Russian bank o f the Pasvik River the availability of suitable habitats is limited, and the Redstart numbers are low. This is due to the relatively high diversity o f forest vegetation. Very different types o f forest habitats from pure pine and pure birch forests to various mixed stands occur here. Besides, due to lumbering and forest fires, forest vegetation at different succession stages, age and with varying specific composition, and other param eters is widely available. On the Norwegian bank o f the Pasvik, Redstart numbers are much higher than on the Russian one. Here it is one o f the most common birds along with the Willow Warbler, Brambling and some other species. High Redstart numbers result from the high occur rence o f optimal pure pine stands with out significant proportion o f deciduous trees (Fig. 3.7, types 1 -3 , 5, 6). V.V. Tyakht. The Eurasian Redstart is a common species o f forest-dwelling passerines in Pasvik. E.I. Khlebosolov High sparse pine stands w ithout under growth and dense herbs are typical habitats o f Eurasian Redstarts. 125
