N.ph. А , Figure 2.10. Spatial distribution o f waders which inhabit the mountain tundra. P.a. - G reater Golden Plover, N.ph. —Whimbrel, Ch.m . — Eurasian Dotterel. 1 —moss and lichen tundra, 2 —rock outcrops, 3 —peat tussocks. where the G reater Golden Plover and Whimbrel breed in similar habitats, in the mountain tundra habitats these two species are spatially separated. G reater Golden Plovers occur in the dry patches o f gram ineous and meadow tundra or subshrub and lichen tundra. The Whimbrel occurs along the wet shores o f small lakes and streams with well developed moss cover (Semenov-Tian-Shansky & Gilyazov 1991). Even though the habitats o f G reater Golden Plovers in the bogs and in the mountain tundra are apparently much different, the structure o f foraging substrates remains sim ilar in both habitats. The dry surface o f peat tussocks in the bogs and dry patches o f subshrub and lichen tundra are the feeding m icrohabitats o f this species that collects small invertebrates from the ground. In the tundra, like in the bogs, the Whimbrel finds feeding microhabitats at wet sites and feeds by probing peat sod. The Eurasian Dotterel is much less common in the mountain tundra o f Pasvik than the two former species. This wader takes food from the ground, like the G reater Golden Plover. Unlike this species, however, it settles in the moss and lichen tundra with stony and pebble areas (Spangenberg & Leonovich I960, Kokhanov 2002). The Dotterel prefers such habitats not only in the Kola Peninsula, but in other parts o f its range as well. For example, on the Wrangel Island near Chukchi Peninsula this species inhabits well drained, stony and pebble and loamy and pebble areas with lichen or subslirub and lichen vegetation (Stishov et al. 1991). Waders of lowland tundra The zonal lowland tundra in the Pasvik valley occupies a very limited area. Several shorebird species breed there which are very rare in other habitats o f Pasvik: 101
