230 A phenological atlas of plants submitted before a stated deadline and displayed, and a jury chooses the best ones. The same applies to other phases, species, events. 2. Dance contest (e.g. ‘Waltz of the flowers’). The aspects evaluated apart from the dance itself are the choice of music, garments, and the matic slides for visual back-up. A phenology-related play can be staged for theatric representation of a research project. 3. Hand-written book, leaflet, newspaper, flyer, poem contest. A pheno phase or group of phenophases is chosen; children carry out observations and draw up the results in the form of a book/leaflet, etc., for instance “Dripping spring", “Green noise”, “Multicolored glade", “Autumn leaves". 4. Science conference, open lesson. These could be organized by active senior pupils as educational events for junior pupils to inspire them to study phenology. 5. Contest of ‘color’ crossword puzzles: ‘yellow’, ‘blue’, ‘red’, for which plants are selected: endemic, rare, poisonous, whatnot. These activities can be very exciting given that the pupils invest enough effort and that the teacher has delivered the idea well and helped prepare the materials and organize the process in general. Seasonal changes occur in plants as well as in animals. Many species of birds migrate to other countries in autumn to come back in spring, quite a few species change summer hair to warmer winter pelage, which is also of a different color. The mountain hare, for example, bears white ‘furs’ in winter and gray in summer. These changes are also seasonally recurring. In other words, there are plenty of objects to be observed. Thus, as they study the phenological characteristics of plants and animals, schoolchildren get to know the nature of their little and greater homeland. Russia is a northern country. Its geographical position and size offer exclusive conditions for the most varied phenological observations, nature studies and conservation.
