190 A phenological atlas of plants The recommendation in the field guide prepared within the project "Phenology of the North Calotte" (Korjakin and Flo, 2003) is to focus ob servations by schoolchildren on 9 of the above species (Makarova et al., 2010) (tab. 1): • trees - birch, • shrubs - rowan, • dwarf shrubs - dwarf cornel, Labrador tea, cowberry, and bilberry, • herbaceous plants - cloudberry, rosebay willowherb, and globeflower. Furthermore, the school project did not have the task to trace the species’ entire cycle from initial growth to die-back (leaf fall), but con centrated on just one or two most vivid phases, because the idea was to familiarize schoolchildren with the basics of phenology, in this manual however we undertake to portray the cycle of phenological observations of plants throughout the growing season. We hope this would both broaden the phenological activities of the above-mentioned school project and motivate teachers to work with children individually.
