Species selection for phenology observations A common practice is to do phenological observations on vascular plants, where seasonal changes are quite explicit. Ini 994 the scientific project “Seasonal Life of Nature in the Kola North" (Makarova et al., 2001) suggested a list of plant species to be co-moni- tored (Tab. 1) for 16 phenophases (Tab. 2). This list is made up of species widespread in Northern Fennoscandia, i.e. the Murmansk Region, Republic of Karelia, Norway, Sweden and Finland. From the biological point of view, they are of interest because they have different phenological rhythms and habit, occur throughout the territory and are therefore available for observation, commonly known or easily identifiable.
