Introduction 187 tific editions, mass media, on nature reserve websites, etc. Importantly, the data should be shared with phenology centres: the observer (nature reserve, school, other organization) w ill thus contribute to the study of seasonal development trends in a much wider territory, e.g. European Russia, Urals, Western Siberia, etc. You can then rest assured that the data you've gathered w ill serve the science of phenology, forecasting and study of relationships between climate and living nature rather than just be ‘tucked back in a desk drawer’ as unpublished reports only you know of or, even worse, totally unprocessed handwritten notes and tables. Having a datasheet on the route doesn’t mean the observer can do with out a field log. It is needed to put down other events that happened during the day but are not on the main programme of phenological observations. These could be records on the weather conditions and situation at water bodies on the day of observation, various events in the life of animals and so on. The datasheet may however include sections for such records as well. The reader should be warned against recording very early dates, where the observer tends to record the earliest dates of event onset in the rush to ‘outstrip’ oneself or another observer. To avoid such unreason able ‘competition’ and distortion of the actual phenology situation one should carefully study the descriptions of phenophases and criteria of their onset, and record them only from the plant communi ties (habitats) typical of the chosen species, for instance forest but not mire for crowberry, forest for pine and downy birch and, vice versa, mire for dwarf birch (even if some specimens grow in forest margin or low-lying sites). These risks of recording “unnatural" dates have also been justly pointed out by A. N. Solovyov (2005a).
