174 A phenological atlas of plants The value of this phenological Atlas is undoubful because the authors, based on the analysis of actual research and methodological literature, have performed a comparison of the names and descriptions of phe nological phases according to the European system BBCH and several Russian approaches for the plant species that serve as phenological indicators of commencement of seasons and their sections. General aspects ofsetting up phenological observations have been discussed including selection of a phenological route, frequency of observations, and technologies of documenting the observations results. The Appen dixes to the publication include a datasheet for recording the phenology data of plant communities, the nature’s calendar of the Pasvik Reserve (Zapovednik) for 1993-201Д, and a visual appraisal scale for assessment of the vegetation status. Special notice should be taken of the provided methodological recommendations for arrangement of phenological mon itoring for schoolchildren, which makes the book invaluable for practical classes of nature studies, and also can be used in other regions of Russia, outside the High North. The information is presented at a high scientific level and is of prac tical interest as a teaching aid in research and education for specialists in protected areas.
