Preface 173 This Atlas is focused, primarily, on observations in the Kola Peninsula, but it also can be useful for the North-West of Russia. Characteristic and typical plants are selected, observation phases are identified, clear criteria for their documentation are given. Without doubt, the Atlas w ill become a common methodological basis for mass phenological monitoring in the region and building a unified database of phenological information. It w ill be especially useful for organization of observations at schools, in groups of young nature lovers, and international school projects. The methodological basis of the Atlas and the arrangement of the presented information may be very useful for specialists from other regions of Russia to develop similar regional publications targeted, in the long run, at better coordination of phenological observations in Russia and their harmonization with international standards.
