ENVIRONMENTAL PATH The environmental path means the route especially chosen for exploring the nature of the definite part of the landscape. As a rule the majority of the paths are foot-paths. To drive up to the end or to the begining of the path is possible if the parking places or landing-stages for motor-boats are planned. Sometimes in summer the bycycle can be used or skies in winter. But the best way of exploring the nature is to go on foot along the path to stop for reading stands and placards especially if you have a gide. The main rule you have to keep strictly is to preserve nature within the path. The route should meet the following requiments: 1. The length is considered to be not more than 10— 12 km. The relevant length is about 5 km. There should be some places for short rest and for rubbish. The places for camp-fire and for staying overnight should be removed outside the path. The begining and the end of the path can be at the same place. You may shorten the route and mark the place by setting the special pointer. 2. Each path should be marked. The marking-out should be permanent and done in equal manner. The route should be marked along the whole distance through each kilometer using the big stones, high stubs or by painting on the trunks of the trees. There is a special system of signboards, pointers and stands with texts, which are changed due to each season. So you get known not only about the names of the plants but also about the time of their flowering and ripening. 3. In order to present the nature of the area in details, the route should include the acquaintance with usual plants of the region, geological peculiarities, historical places. If there is a populated area near the path you should explain its name, describe it and give short information about it (the date of foundation, history, amount of population and its occupation). The special attention should be paid to the local names of mountains, rivers and lakes. You have to speak about the name and the 10
