Korelsky, V. F. Fish, fishermen and fish industry in Russia / V. F. Korelsky. - Bremen : Krebs, [1993?]-.

At the beginning of 1964, the available research fleet was supplemented with modern research ships of the type N. Knipovich type. The material and technical basis of the institutes became considerably stronger. The investigation of the Far-Eastern region of Russia, one of the richest in fish resources, deserves special attention. In 1946-47, schools of large herring were discovered in the Sea of Okhotsk; in 1950-52, schools of flounder were found in the Peter the Great Bay. In 1958, a large-scale expedition to the Bay of Alaska was organized, which lasted till 1964. Large supplies of ocean perch, herring, cod, black halibut, sable fish and others were discovered. In 1956, an experimental fishing of Atlantic saury was carried out, which required of science and industry a completely new technique of fishing. But all difficulties were overcome, and already in 1960 fishermen began its industrial fishing. The catching of sparat was begun on the Caspian sea with the aid of electric light and fish-pumps. In this period, science not only helped the fishing to open up new suitable regions, but also to introduce new techniques on fishing. An essential technical achievement was the pelagic trawling, which made it possible to begin fishing pelagic objects by trawlers. The period of 1976-77 was one of the most difficult for the fish industry. The introduction of 200-mile fishing zones by naval states practically closed the most productive regions for our ships, and thus this deprived our country of 64% of the whole catch. These actions of naval states forced us to search for new fishing regions more actively. Schools of capelin were found in the far regions of the Barents sea and its active fishing began in 1977. The introduction of these zones made the industry to stir up the fishing of blue whiting in the Sea of Norway. Thus, if in 1975 only 26.7 thousand tones of this fish were caught, in 1978 the catch constituted 210.0 thousand tons and in 1979, 689.0 thousand tons. Schools of large mackerel were found and began to be fished in 1980. A start was made on industrial fishing of iwashi in the Far East in 1975 and became especially active from 1978 (207 thousand tons). Mintai was caught in the Far East, in the region of the Sea of Okhotsk, the West-Bering region, near the Sakhalin Island. A notable scientific discovery was a high-productive region in the south-eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. An expedition organized by the Chief Administration “Zapryba” in May, 1978, revealed large schools of Pacific jack mackerel near the coast of Peru. This region proved to be so productive that for long it remained the main fishing region for our fishermen. In 1976-80, we have investigated and started industrial fishing in the region of New Zealand, where black whiting, kalmar, and crucian were caught In 1980, large schools of ocean perch were found in the region of the Sea of Irminger, which were successfully exploited by the industry. 2 3
