The author of this book began his working life as a ship’s boy. Then he attended a nau­ tical college and finally took on a leading position in the state-run fish industry of the Russian Federation. Korelsky was born in the Archangel region which is sacred to the Russian people since it is connected with the name of Mikhail Lomonosov, the great Russian scientist. He studied at the Academy of Economic Sciences and was once the president of the Northern Fishery Trade Association (ARP ’’Sevryba”). In 1988 he successfully defended his thesis written under the guidance o f professors Krivogus and Gavrilov. He did not give up his academic work but continued to write essays and monographs in which he investi­ gated complicated social and economic problems. Later he wrote this two-volume book. Furthermore, he took on a heavy burden of managing the fish industry under hard conditions of transition to market relations that begin dёveloping in Russia. Korelsky has written a scientific paper in a language accessible to a wide circle of readers. It contains both ’’sober observations which come from one’s mind and comments which come from one’s heart.” It is his first work published in Germany. The first part of the book is devoted to the situation faced by fishermen the conditions of whose work the author knows from his personal experience. The second part of the book deals with problems encountered by managers of the Russian fish industry in the period of economic reforms.
