136 classes. In the Balto-Fennic toponymy semantic components, referring to the attribute and the determinant are distinguished. We believe that a computer database will facilitate the implementa tion of the following tasks: 1. To identify a substrate place name stratum, its phonetic and mor phological peculiarities and the area of the key and peripheral zones of its specific features. To define the level of homogeneity and repetition of place names, as well as their density in a certain area unit. 2. To identify toponymy areas, etymologyzed by living languages, spoken in the European North of Russia. To define place name struc tural types and their semantics: 1) Balto-Fennic, 2) Sami, 3) Komi, 4) Ugric, 5) Samodian, 6) Russian (Slavic). 3. To investigate areas of place name interaction, toponymic zones of two and more living languages. To investigate frequency ratios of dif ferent place-names in different areas. 4. To define absolute and relative place name frequencies of every language according to the area unit. 5. To extend the structural types of the Uralic and Russian place- names in various areas. 6. To define toponymic isoglottic lines of identical phenomena in semantics and structure. 7. To identify determinants and attributes of place-names in Uralic languages. 8. To investigate the ratio of toponymic and appellative vocabulary according to areas and regions. In the process of research we may pursue some other tasks: to iden tify the principles of assimilation of the substrate toponymy by the Russian language, to identify the ratio of vernacular and Russian voca bulary in the toponymy of areas and regions etc. The database structure enables one to do the following comparisons «place-name — object». The investigation of object selection principles for nomination, taking into regard natural-geographical and cultural-historical features of the region is rather interesting from our standpoint.
