G .D . Kataev. Fauna and Ecology o f Mammals ( Roden tia, Inseclivora) of Lapland. Saint-Petersburg: VVM Publishing, 2021. — P. 437. Tabl. 137. Fig 31. Bibl. 624. ISBN 978 -5 -9651 -1354 -5 The proposed book summarizes (he long-term (1971-2020) population-ecological studies of the author made mainly on the territory of the Lapland reserve. The monography presents modem information concerning fauna o f 23 species o f the mammals — rodents and shrews, their status and nature o f their stay on Kola North, including endemic — Norwegian lemming. Various aspects o f the ecology and biology o f the population of the animals on the northern periphery of their ranges are studied by multiannual exper imental research. The spread and the number of animals, peculiarities of their nutrition, reproduction, trophic relations and morphophysiological features are studied taking into consideration the altitude of mountain systems. The influence of external factors on the change in the structure of populations and their way of adaptation to existence in the Arctic is show n. The role o f protected areas in the conservation o f rare species in the region and the discovery of the new ones is also examined. The reserve as a conserved standard of north-taiga forests and mountain-tundra landscapes is considered as a sensitive and adequate indicator o f man-made impact. The materials o f the Micromammalia that has been collected on the monitoring line “Yelnyun" in the Lapland reserve since 1936 are unique for it's long series of observations. The analysis of information on the population ecology of Micromammalia is important for practical issues: predicting the quantity of species — participants in trophic chains, natural infections as well as the possibility of bioindication of environmental disorders. The book is intended for zoologists of various profiles, ecologists in the field of nature conservation, local history community. Responsible editor: Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.
