the Soviet victory and its «price» is a permanent question for debate among historians and the subject of rethinking in the monograph. On the one hand the Civil War ended with the Red Army victory, but on the other the Bolsheviks had to retreat into the NEP. The connection between the Civil War and Stalinism has been for a long time a traditional polemical question in Western historiography, but since the end of 1980s this problem has been very topical for Russian specialists too. The lessons of the Russian tragedy of 1917 — 1922 are significant for the modern generation of Russian people and politicians, and for the searching of the best and effective way of reforms in post-Soviet Russia. A proper understanding of Russian society before and during the tragedy of Civil War is important for studying Russian national history in the XX century and for an understanding the future of the Russian Federation as it enters XXI century.
