RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR STUDIES: 1985-2000 A history of the Russian Civil War is a permanent subject for scholarly debate both in the Russian and Western historiography. The author of this book analyzes the main problems of modern historiography during the Soviet «perestroika» period and after the dissolution of the USSR. The book attempts to search for new theoretical approaches, methodology, and emerging conceptions by Russian and foreign historians and political scientists. The main tendencies of Russian Civil War studies since the middle of 1980s are addressed in the first chapter. Russian historiography has drifted from the Soviet historical and ideological heritage to a pluralism of opinions, from the covering of the «blank» spots to a newer, more enlightened understanding of the Russian Civil War. The attempts of reconsidering the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War after the fall of communism in the Western historical literature are thoroughly examined in the book. Since 1991 much of the rethinking was done by the Russian scholars together with Western specialists. It is worth mentioning that both Russian and Western scholars have paid more attention to the local and regional history of the civil war but only in the last decade. Many of these studies illustrate how many different versions of the civil war occurred throughout Russia. The origins of the Civil War are investigated both in a long and a short retrospective in the second chapter of the book: traditions of Russian political history and statehood, peasant wars, peculiarities of the liberation and revolution movement, influence of the Great War and the Russian revolution of 1917 (as a set of different revolutions) and collapse of the state and authority. The different aspects of interaction between the Revolution and Civil War and the historians’ points of view are examined by the author. He characterizes a debate about the reasons of the war, the responsibilities of different forces and questioning what types of alternatives could have avoided this awful cataclysm of the Russian and World history. The starting point of the Civil War in Russia is another question for debate. The concrete dates of 1917 or 1918 which are pointed out by historians were connected with the definite events and actions of the different political forces. But it is difficult or almost impossible
