CIVILWAR IN RUSSIA THROUGH THE PRISM OF YEARS: HISTORIOGRAPHICAL PROCESSES The Civil War in Russia (1917-1922) considered one of the most impor tant events in both Russian and world history of XX century. After the end of it up to nowadays, according to the author’s estimates, more than 30 thousands of books and several hundred thousands of articles devoted to this subject have been published in Russia and abroad. This book is devoted to the modem histo riography of the Russian Civil War. The author analyses methodology, different theoretical approaches, traditions and new tendencies of the world historiogra phy of this theme during post-Soviet period. The role of the Russian Civil War, its place in the historical and cultural memory of the nation, the main reasons of its reappraisal during the last 20 years discovered in the Introduction of the book. The first chapter is devoted to the genesis of the Russian Civil War. Its origins are investigated both in a long and short retrospective. For the proper understanding of the reasons of the Russian Civil War, it is necessary to examine it through the prism of «the long» history, discover the traditions of Russian statehood, peasant wars and revolts, peculiari ties of the revolutionary movement and struggle for liberation, etc. From the «short» history viewpoint, it is important to discover the interactions between World War I, Russian Revolution of 1917 and Civil War in Russia. All these problems have been discussed in the historical literature up to nowadays and are thoroughly analyzed in the monograph. The real beginning, starting point of the Russian Civil War is another question for debate, which examined by the author. There are different opinions, and from the author’s viewpoint, it is better to speak about Russia’s gradual involvement in the Civil War. Chapter 2 is devoted to the important and contradictory events, problems and processes of 1918 in Russia. The results and consequences of the revolu tionary development during the first months of the year, conflicts between the revolutionary and counterrevolutionary forces and its reflection in the contem porary historical literature analyzed in the chapter. The author examines thor oughly a set of events of May and June 1918 - the Czech Legion uprising. For eign intervention (both the Entente and Central powers); formation of the anti- Soviet armies and governments; extraordinary policy of the Soviet power in the countryside and its desire to split the peasantry and, as a result, a set of peasant revolts meant that Russia was really involved in the full-scale, cruel and bloody Civil War with exterior and inner fronts. Different historiographical problems, approaches and discussions both in Russian and Western literature discovered in this chapter. The third chapter is devoted to the old and newer conceptualization of the Russian Civil War. The author analyses different approaches and definitions of this phenomenon, characterizes it as a set, complex of wars.
