3 7 The January light arrives but for a moment... The January light arrives but for a moment, then once again it melts down through the mountains. At our place right now it’s dark and cramped, but the herdsmen always keep their watch. It isn’t easy for them, no doubt about it; the hardship doubles with the Polar night. The herder and a thousand head of reindeer, it’s not their first time going out alone. The reindeer, a warm mass o f trailing clouds, walk through the night toward a rosy sunrise. You can’t sever them from our venerable tundra; a herd of ATV’s cannot replace them. And even in this age of cosmic spaceflight, a time of dramatic but benevolent changes, for the Saami, the northern reindeer remains undemanding, simple, and protected.
