2 9 Springtime harvest The May sun swims in the lake, in the glacial, springlike water. The light-blue tundra has woken up, and the din o f birds swells everywhere. The weather does not indulge us northerners: May bedevils us, then rain, then snowfall, and all the raindeer herders stay with their animals day in and day out. I don’t know o f any time more crucial and stark than when calving time erupts. And each spring day w ill live on, thoughtful and bright, like a bonfire. For the herdsman, it’s a habit and an honor to hold in his hands the trusting fawns of irreplaceable northern animals. To give life, expecting nothing in return, in the course o f everyday, humdrum work - that’s the deeper meaning. The herdsman’s calling, his blessed labors have made it through the centuries unscathed!
