ig6 And his tune is not gaudy, it’s precious to me, like an amulet! Since the end of the 20th century the study of the modern eth nic literatures in the Eurasian area has progressed from invisible to somewhat accepted status. A similar process occurred with Native American literatures two decades earlier, resulting in their accep tance into libraries, classrooms, and on the Internet by the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. The recognition o f all ethnic literatures is long overdue, and with this volume we wish to contribute to this slow but very necessary process. The increasing visibility of such writings by ethnic authors must further inspire the types of scholarly, institutional, and publishing support which is necessary to foster and sustain the growth o f this new ly forming, yet surpris ingly old field.
