And once again, it seems, I hear his peaceful tenor voice, and I see his statuesque gaze w ith a tender word - sonny boy! »Look, this pilot’s cap almost fits you perfectly!" and boots ... almost a perfect f i t . . . ! You’re just like my son, Volod’ka, who would have been in first grade ... « The soldier fell silent and his sad gaze told me much about him, and already, not accidentally, I shed a bitter tear. What a pity we were only eight years old, only eight, bewail the fact, otherwise we would have met this autum on the front lines. And we would have plunged into hand-to-hand combat, and, maybe, the fight would have been our last. Just like our own fathers, who did not come home from the war. The war did not conduct itself on the scale o f boys’ games. At least patience and faith were w ith the boys at the right time! Human memory is limitless, and as long as I live, I w ill not forget
