9 7 The North and the man Here the mountains are aw fully steep, here the winds are awfully vicious. Only the plaited birch-branches are always benevolent to man. The Polar summer wanes, having briefly been our guest. Upon the yellow hues o f autumn, the rain rustles ruthlessly. Look at the nightly frosts, as they enviously settle in the forest, it brings to mind the summer storms, and days the sunset did not touch. Those white nights over the tundra, - it’s a time beyond compare, so unusual and necessary, so brief, but beloved by all!
