Both the historical succession of the major directions of oceanological investigations determined by the demands to solve the problems of marine biology and a constant development of the pointed out problems which is equal to the widening of the activity sphere at the aca demic institute. The results of the major stage in oceanography of North-European Seas studies are shown. Separate development periods of this sphere of hydrobiology in MMBI distinguished by definite directions of works and investigated geographical areas and the priority of their theoretical or applied character are selected and characterized. All the participants of the carried out investigations are pointed out. The results of the fulfilled works are given, their significance for the science and eco nomy is shown. Continuity of generations of specialists during fulfillment of work is demonstrated. All the major theoretical developments and concepts formulated by the MMBI planktonologists as the result of thinking and analysis of the data obtained are enumerated; subsequent ways for the investigation of marine pelagic algocenoses by the scientists are presented.
