— 113 — Ka r a S t r a i t that the party was unable to move for 9 days, surrounded by heavy packice. They had to return to N i k o l s k y S h a r which proved to be a wide gulf. The latter was named after A. K a r p i n s k y , President of the scientific board of the Institute. Later on, profiting of a strong west wind, which drove ice away from the eat coast, the party sailed to cape M e n s h i k o v , then free from ice, and reached the K a z a k o v River. The area in the south island of Novaya Zemlya, adjacent to P e t u c h o v s k y S h a r and stretching farther eastward, shows an abraded surface 5 to 15 m above sea level. In the region of Petuchovsky Shar there are rocky hills and abrupt rocks of restangular shape constituted of limestones and remin ding of bastions of a fortress. The next station of the party was in the S a v i n B a y extremely difficult to distinguish from sea. The bay is acces sible but to very small ships. The shore bears the character of a lowland some 20—30 m above sea level, stretching bow-like from one cape to another, the latter two projecting far into the sea 2—3 miles from each other. The shore is constituted of dark grey sandstones. Bailing farther to the A b r o s s i m o v B a y the party found one Y e r s h o v island instead of two marked on the map. The Abrossimov Bay, where the party anchored, is a wide gulf, thoguh very shallow at its summit on account of alluvions of the large Abrossimov river falling into it from west. The north side consists of a hard solid variety of grit light to dark grey in colour. North of cape Y e r s h o v the central part of Novaya Zemlya is notably rising, reaching 100—120 m, then lowering towards the cape H e s s e n . North of the latter the surface of Novaya Zemlya becomes more furrowed. Moun tain ridges form a range trending northwest. One of the wide bays of the east coast is the S t e p o v o y B a y very convenient for big ships. North of the latter the coast is sloping abruptly towards the sea from 50 m height above sea level. In that bay as well as in others there is plenty of drift-wood deposed usually on the south shore of each bay. Further northward the party investigated a large bay which got the name after Prof. K n i p o v i t c h ; then the S c h u b e r t B a y was reached. The coasts of the latter are constituted of dark grey clayey schists, whereas the bay is very rich in sea beast. Sa lmo alpinus is dwelling in abun dance in the Savin-as well as in the Abrossimov Bay. The mountains in the Schubert Bay reach 200—380 m height. The last place of the works of the party was the K l o k o v Bay into which a very powerful river is fal ling, making its way through sandstones and quartzites. In general, the rivers of the southern island might be divided into two groups. Rivers of the first group fall directly into ocean without forming bays; they are of canyon type. The second group are rivers falling into wide bays. Some of the latter group, as the B e z i m y a n n a y a and A b r o s s i m o v , form wide lagunes at the bays. The Geophysical Observatory in Matotchkin Shar was reached on the 13-th of August. The whole track around the south island of Novaya Zemlya was thus covered in 31 days. The party stationed then at cape Morshevoy in Matotchkin Shar to the end of September, to finish the work Новая Земля. 8
