State of the ice on the East shores of Svalbard in the summer of 1928. A. Lavroff. The expedition on board the ice-breaker „Malygin", sent to rescue the dirigible „Italy", took notes of the condition of the ice in the North-West part of the Barents sea, while sailing near the eastern shores of Svalbard. The observations were made on a area of three degrees of latitude from 76 to 79°N and of ten degrees of longitude from 25° to 35 E Greenwich. The ship reached these parts of the sea June 18, when it was still covered with unbroken ice-fields, and stayed there a month till July 18, when navigation was only beginning in that region. In this way the expedition had occasion to observe the succesive stages of ice breaking and deterioration in one of the least accessible parts of the Barents sea. Near the south shores of the archipelago it stayed only three days, from 19 to 21 July, and the observations there had only an accidental character. It is interesting to note, that near the eastern shores there was found only ice of one year's formation with a small quantity of broken ice of the autumn breaking period. This is rather an exception to the general rule of the ice condition in the part of the sea, where the eastern Svalbard sea current brings ice from more northern regions. This creates in connection with winds blowing from different directions, favorable conditions for the formation of the Autumn fields of hummocky ice, till it has not yet acquired a sufficient degree of thickness. On the south coast of the archipelago the expedition chiefly found ice of many years standing, consisting of large and small broken up blocks. The south limit of the ice-fields observed from the „Malygin", when compared with the indications given in the „Isforholdene i de arktiske Have“ was more favo rable: by one degree latitude, meridian 29° E—Greenwich in the second decade of June. In the first decade of July— one degree latitude, meridian 31°30' E and in the second decade of July—two degrees latitude meridian 35° E. Научные работы ледокола „Малыгин" б
