1934 г. The Yona magnetite deposit D. Murashov S u m m a r y The Yona iron-ore deposits are located in the south-western p a rt of the Kola Peninsula. I t is confined to the con tact of limestones w ith nepheline syenites; skarns are developed in this zone consisting of calcite, olivine, chondrodite, clinohumite, magnetite, apa tite and green mica. The ore-formation is closely connected with the skarns and is represented by several varieties of ores: a) Medium-grained skarn ores with an average content of Fe = 35—50%, P == 1—2% and S = hundredths of a percent. b) Wide-banded ores with an average content of Fe == 40—60%, P = 0,25% and S = hundredths of a percent. c) Bowlder ore with a content of Fe approximately 60%, P and S = hundredths of a percent. The wide-banded ores are of the greatest significance, occurring am idst the skarns in the form of bands of thickness up to some scores of meters. The composition of the ore-deposit is mostly of magnetite, which near the sur face is replaced by martite. The richest ores contain little phosphorous, which is explained by the presence of apa tite chiefly in the skarns. The ore-deposit belongs to the amanation type; the presence of tin and zinc in certain varieties of ores gives us an indication of the wide temperature range of the processes of ore formation which took place here. A magnetic survey traced the outlines of the ore-deposit on an area of 0,4 sq. km; the greatest p a rt of it takes in the top and the slopes of an eminence, rising 90 meters above sea-level, which makes it very advantageous to work it openpit. According to the magnetic data the ore deposit goes down to a depth of 500 m with the same horizontal dimensions. This large and interesting ore deposit demands a detail survey. Besides this prospecting work must be continued in the adjacent region.
