The 1-st part of the Monograph „The Khibine and Lovozero Tundras1 contains a general report on the summer investigations conducted in the years 1920—1924 by a special party of the Northern Scientific and Econo­ mic Expedition of the Supreme Council of Public Economy, under Prof. A. E. Fersman, M. Ac., in the central portion of the Russian Lappland, constituted of two wide mountain massives, Umptek and Luyavrurt. The purpose of the Expedition was the geochemical investigation of these two alcaline massives, the largest in the world. The exploration of the above ranges, in general, may be considered accomplished, whereas the study of the material collected, undertaken by a whole group of students, will yet take much time; nevertheless, we may already establish the following distribution of scientific material in the extensive Monograph on the Khibine and Lovozero Tundras. The 1-st part of the work begins with the general report on the works of the expedition during five summers. In 1920 the expedition was just a reconnaisance, whereas the systematic investigation began but in 1921 when parties worked in the southwest portion of the Khibine massive. In 1922, the works were transferred to the northwestern and later on to the northeastern portion of the massive. In the same year one party penetrated in the Lovozero tundras to study the local conditions of work, at Luyavrurt. In 1923 the western and northwestern portions of Umptek were covered by supplementary routes, and the southeastern portion was
