This settlement is located in the hinterland of the Kola Peninsula, not far from Lovozero in a mountainous area. Traditionally, Anna Nikolaevna's family too lived from reindeer herding, fishing and hunting. Already before her birth, Anna Nikolaevna's father worked as a brigade leader (Brigadir) in the kolkhoz; in their village collectivization had taken place rela­ tively early.
