The Soviets used the waters near the port city of Murmansk as a dump for radioactive waste from 1964 to 1986. The inexplicable act of using the Arctic Ocean as a nuclear dump threatens the northern Sami greatly because of their dependence on fish for a large part of their diet and in come. [...] The waters in which the dumping occurred were only tens of meters deep or less, with a high fish population located in the area.
